Welcome to Intraversal Audio Design, portfolio of Benjamin Federer (MA). During my studies at TU/KU Graz, FH Furtwangen and Muisc University Basel I began working as a sound designer, music producer and DSP-programmer. Since 2010 I work freelance in an eclectic field of projects.

Nachtschichten - Klang:Zeit:Klang radio
Radio sound installation for the NACHTSCHICHTEN program of Radio LoRa Zürich.
The installation deals with the concept of now and translates the passing of time into sound. Klang:Zeit:Klang was on air without interruption in the nights from January 23th to February 5th 2006.

From Rock and Pop to Electronica and Jazz - As a producer I am assisting artists to turn their vision into reality, both on the technical and on the aesthetical level. The main focus is on concentrating creativity and energy of the music to gain an impressive performance.
Early till 20th-century music - As a Tonmeister I am responsible for capturing acoustic perfomances in a high quality recording. This means not only making the right choices in regards to technical equipment and acoustics but also keeping the best sound quality and a productive working atmosphere up until the final mix.

Custom Made Audio Tools: Applications for electronic music and live performances, sound manipulation tools for composers and sonification software to make abstract data sets come to life in an audible way. All my programs are based on Max/MSP and enriched with languages like C, Java, JavaScript and so on.
1shooter & nanoPadster live instruments
The two instruments were conceived for the live performances of my duo Strange Case of Dr Wacky & Mr Tight with drummer André Bader.
André uses 1shooter as a live sampling machine to record his sound directly while playing and then interface it with his digital drum pads.
The nanoPadster is designed to be used with the Korg nanoPad and relies heavily on the nanoPad's X/Y pad to control effects in two dimensions at once.
Retunator sound manipulation
The Retunator features the manipulation of monophonic audio material.
Pitch, formants, playback speed and direction can be altered independently which leads to unusual sounds. Any monophonic audio recording may be used as source material.

Spectral Pitch sound manipulation
Spectral Pitch was specially conceived for a newly composed piece.
The software allows any pitch manipulation while at the same time the sound duration can be expanded or compressed. That way it is possible to get e.g. a 45 minute sound from a tiny sound bit as short as a few seconds.
Internal signal processing is based on FFT spectral analysis and additive resynthesis.
Sonification Universal sonification
Abstract data can become hard to understand visually. But even then sound can be a convenient way to still make sense out of the most complex data. The Sonification Universal application scores data curves with different musical voices by variation of pitch or spectral modulation.
P. Clemann's Gehörbildung application
Three little applications (Mac OS X 10.4+) to aid students' ear training. The exercises are based on Paul Clemann's courses at the Hochschule für Musik Basel.

Voices live instrument
An instrument for live electronic performances.
Voices synthesizes the human singing voice with a waveform sample and a formant eq. It is as light as possible on the cpu and at the same time provides a convincing sound. The software is capable of up to four voices and chords. It is played with joystick and computer keyboard.
iindex~ Max/MSP object
iindex~ is an external for Max/MSP by Cyling '74. It features the same functionality as index~ but has been enhanced with a 4 pole interpolation as described by Miller Puckette. That makes granulation and pitch effects possible without the need to convert milliseconds and samples and is therefore lighter on the CPU. iindex~ is only available for Mac OS X (UB) and compatible with Max 4.6+.
